2008 DC Pirate Club Spring Banquet Cancelled
A Letter and Update from Outgoing DC Chapter President Vince Smith

Pirates, There will be no Pirate Club Spring banquet this year.  I must apologize for getting this out late to you.  It is something I have struggled with for somre time but the decision was made in my mind some time ago and once I discussed it with Harry Stubbs (our Chapter Alumni President) it was clear.

Now, let me give you a little background to my coming to this decision.  In 2005 and 2006 we were fortunate to have Skip Holtz for our Spring Banquets.  Both those events were great successes with turn outs of 65 to 70 folks both years.  In addition, the local chapter made a few dollars to help with the basic operations throughout the year.

Last year we were unable to secure Skip or any of our head coaches and as one might expect without a name headliner, our banquet suffered.  We had a turn out of about 20 Pirates, which we were happy to have and the coaches in attendance were great but it was a marked departure from the two previous years and we lost money.

Before we go any further I want you all to know the buck stops with me in getting our Guest Speaker for the banquet and I obviously did not do the best job I could.  Once again, we do not have a top name for our 2008 Spring Banquet.  Let me be clear, I believe this is an example of why it is time for my tenure as Chapter President to come to an end.

I took the job in 2004 with the intent of doing the job for 2 years and securing a location for regular viewing of Pirate Football.  It took 3 years but we now have that location at Bailey's in Ballston and it is time for me to go for many other reasons as well.

I am looking to all you Pirates in the National Capital Region to canvass one another and discuss who you think would be best to be the next Chapter President.  It really is time for some fresh and new ideas.  In addition, I will be glad to work a smooth transition plan have no intention of rushing the next Chapter president.

Finally, for those of you who have been kind enough to be PC Reps, please ensure your PC renewals are aware of the cancellation if you have not contacted them already (please contact them before 1 May, if you have not).  In addition, don't forget to get your Pirate Club dues and Seeason Football ticket orders in before 1 May...

All My best, Vince

On Mar. 27, 2008, East Carolina celebrated another memorable moment in its remarkable history. At the Rock Springs Center in Greenville, nearly 400 people gathered to kick off the Second Century Campaign, ECU’s first capital campaign in 15 years. With the beginning of this campaign, East Carolina embarked on a journey—one that will pave the way toward a bold vision for the university’s future. At the kick off, ECU announced that $90.7 million had been raised toward the $200 million financial target.

Although we have set a fund raising target for the campaign, its true purpose is to enrich, change and save lives. Please take a moment to read about the Second Century Campaign and consider the role you might play in the tremendous impact this campaign will have on the lives of East Carolina’s students, the region and the state.

Donors, alumni and friends like you are such a vital piece of East Carolina’s success—donors such as Senator Tom and Dr. Liz Taft whose generous gift to ECU will mean $1.25 million in support for a distinguished professorship in the College of Education for science education and an endowed scholarship for students in science education. Combined, commitments such as that from Senator and Dr. Taft and the other ECU supporters will make a tangible difference in the lives of ECU’s students, staff, faculty, the citizens of eastern North Carolina, and the state as whole.

Between now and Dec. 31, 2012, we will be bringing you the information and stories of this campaign—the stories of generous people, and how their private support is funding the margin of excellence at ECU.

Please contact ECU University Advancement at (252) 328-9595 or univadvance@ecu.edu with any questions or comments you may have about the Second Century Campaign, this document or your part in making this ambitious vision a reality. It is our hope that you will take this opportunity to learn more about East Carolina’s plan for its future—one that will be made brighter through your support. Together, we will shape the future of our university.

2008 Report on and Recipient of OUR Washington/Metro Alumni Chapter Scholarship

Recently the East Carolina University Foundation reported on the status and recipient of our Washington/Metro Alumni Chapter Scholarship. Jacqueline Josten took the time to write our Chapter to thank us for the Scholarship and to tell us a little more about herself.

She begins by writing: “As an out-of state student with a sibling also getting ready for college, paying for college is much harder, so both my parents and I are much honored to receive this (our Washington-Metro Chapter Alumni Scholarship).”

“I am an intended music performance major at ECU.  My main instrument is the flute, although I’ll be taking a few semesters of piano lessons, and I have just this semester begun voice lessons.  So far, I have met with great success, especially with the flute.  I am currently the principal flute position in the orchestra, as well as co-principal flute in the Wind Ensemble, which is the university’s top band.  I have also played in one of the School of Music’s general recitals; in fact, I was the only freshman to do so last semester.  On top of practicing for all of this, I have managed to get to class, and somehow came out of last semester with a 4.0 GPA.”
